Whether you are planning to work on a new construction project or laying the foundation of a property, rely on our team in Grande Prairie to understand geotechnical engineering concepts and their implementation.

What Is Geotechnical Engineering?

Geotechnical engineering is the study of the behaviour of soil and rock from engineering perspective. This engineering discipline covers assessing slope stability and the risk of landslides, rock fall and avalanches. The knowledge gained in this domain can be applied to the design of foundations, clay liners, retaining walls, earth dams, and geo-synthetics for waste containment.

Geotechnics includes the study of some important materials like clay, silt, rock, sand, and snow. In this study, an engineer uses various engineering methods and principles to collect and interpret the physical properties of the materials used in building and construction.

How We Work

Geotechnical engineers perform geotechnical investigations to get the information about the physical properties of soil and rock. The investigation includes surface exploration and subsurface exploration of a construction site. Subsurface exploration includes in-situ testing. Examples of a few common in-situ tests are standard penetration test and cone penetration test. Surface exploration includes geological mapping, geophysical method, and more. Apart from investigation, various tests are performed to check a variety of soil samplers to ensure that the material meets the needs of engineering projects.

Why Choose a Geotechnical Engineer or a Consultant?

A knowledgeable and skilled team of geotechnical professionals includes engineers, technologists, and technicians. They can help:

4

  • Plan infrastructure of roads, tunnels, buildings, and other onshore as well as offshore construction

  • Analyze the stability of slopes and cliffs

  • Assess load-bearing capacity, settlement, and deformation in man-made structures

  • Investigate foundation and site development

  • Monitor construction testing

  • Assess soil erosion and suggest remedial design

  • Conduct engineering reviews and assessments for municipalities

Roles and Responsibilities of Geotechnical Engineers

Geotechnical engineers are responsible for designing foundations on the basis of the characteristics of the structure and the properties of soils. Initially, an engineer estimates the magnitude and location of the loads to be supported. Further, an investigation plan is designed to explore the subsurface. Next, the geotechnical engineer determines necessary soil parameters by performing field and lab testing that includes consolidation test, standard penetration test, and more. Towards the end, the engineer designs the foundation in the safest and most economical manner.
